THE VOLUTE OF ATHENA'S PILLAR

Keith Moul (way back)

In her scroll the marbled future can be read,
while I see her in low relief, crying;
I can hear her torment; she is dying;
beneath the weight of Hymettus, she is dead.

The obscurely simple lie of presence;
it is not now what is, or what should be,
that lingers, seldom fervently, with me.
I do not know of time, but only sense,

spiraling through that senseless mass
for which they have lived, dying all, alone;
an emptiness, left never to atone
for loneliness; to gratify, all pass.
